The transformer core is a vital component of a transformer, and the selection of its material has a direct impact on the transformer's performance. The following outlines key aspects regarding the application of transformer core materials:

Transformer cores typically use silicon steel sheets (also known as electrical steel) as the primary material. Silicon steel is an electrical steel containing a specific proportion of silicon, featuring excellent magnetic permeability, low losses, and good mechanical strength. The thickness of silicon steel sheets generally ranges from 0.35mm to 0.5mm; the thinner the sheet, the lower the loss, although the mechanical strength is correspondingly reduced.

In the application of transformer cores, the selection of silicon steel sheets requires consideration of the following factors:

  1. Magnetic Permeability: The higher the magnetic permeability of the silicon steel sheet, the smaller the required core cross-sectional area for the same voltage and current, thereby reducing the volume and weight of the transformer.

  2. Losses: Losses in silicon steel sheets are mainly categorized into eddy current loss and hysteresis loss. To minimize these losses, multiple layers of silicon steel sheets are typically stacked and coated with insulating varnish to reduce eddy current loss.

  3. Mechanical Strength: The mechanical strength of the silicon steel sheets must be sufficient to withstand the mechanical loads during the transformer's operation, preventing core deformation.

  4. Coefficient of Thermal Expansion: The thermal expansion coefficient of the silicon steel sheets should match that of other transformer components to prevent stress caused by thermal expansion.

  5. Magnetic Stability: The magnetic stability of the silicon steel sheets must ensure stable operation under varying environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity.

In practical applications, the material selection for transformer cores must also be determined based on parameters such as the transformer's rated capacity, voltage level, and frequency. For instance, high-performance silicon steel sheets should be selected for large-capacity, high-voltage, and high-frequency transformers to ensure their performance and reliability.
