When selecting materials for transformer cores, factors such as magnetic permeability, power loss, and heat resistance must be considered. Commonly used core materials include silicon steel sheets, iron-silicon-aluminum (FeSiAl) sheets, and pure iron.

Silicon steel sheets are the primary material for transformer cores, offering excellent magnetic permeability and low power loss. Made from a silicon-iron alloy, silicon steel has high electrical resistivity, which effectively reduces eddy current losses. Furthermore, silicon steel is punched into thin sheets and stacked to form the core, which helps minimize fluctuations in magnetic flux density and improves the transformer's efficiency.

Iron-silicon-aluminum (FeSiAl) sheets are a newer type of core material with superior magnetic permeability and heat resistance. Characterized by high electrical resistivity, they exhibit minimal eddy current loss and excellent thermal stability. FeSiAl sheets maintain good magnetic performance even in high-temperature environments, making them suitable for high-power transformers.

Pure iron possesses outstanding magnetic permeability but suffers from high power loss and poor heat resistance. Therefore, in practical applications, pure iron is mainly used in small-scale and low-voltage transformers.

When choosing transformer core materials, the following factors should also be taken into account:

  1. Transformer Capacity: Large-capacity transformers should use silicon steel or FeSiAl sheets to ensure low losses and good magnetic permeability.

  2. Transformer Frequency: High-frequency transformers should utilize FeSiAl sheets to minimize eddy current losses.

  3. Operating Environment: In harsh environments with high temperatures or humidity, core materials with excellent heat and corrosion resistance should be selected.

  4. Cost: Silicon steel and FeSiAl sheets are relatively more expensive, while pure iron is lower in cost. The choice should be made based on specific practical requirements.

In summary, the selection of transformer core materials requires a comprehensive consideration of magnetic permeability, power loss, heat resistance, operating environment, and cost.
